ESTHERThe youth of this present generation are overwhelmed with diverse new age challenges, fantasies and distractions.  I interacted with a select group of young people and here are what they have to say:

  • PEER PRESSURE: youth whose friends smoke, drink alcohol, take drugs or engage in other negative behaviors are more likely to engage in those behaviors themselves. But the opposite is also true: adolescents whose friends have high educational aspirations do well in school and engage in other healthy behaviors tend to behave that way, too.
  • POVERTY: poverty impedes learning and contributes to social and behavioral problems. And guess what? There is no income to counteract these problems.
  • CULTISM: instances, especially in government schools (university, secondary school) can be a war zone. We are not talking about minor bullying, but rather serious violence. Consider that in the last year more than 50 kids were murdered due to school violence – these were shootings, stabbings, fighting and suicides. Growing up is tough enough without having to be worried about being killed while going to class.
  • DRUG/ALCOHOL ABUSE: There was a time in cinematic history where virtually every actor/actress was portrayed on screen with a cigarette in hand. Smoking, it was implied, was cool. As a result everyone was doing it, including TEENS. Well, as awareness to the danger of smoking increased, “cool” images of smoking disappeared. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about drugs and alcohol. These vices are staples in everyday media. Simply, drinking and using drugs is shown as being cool.
  • SENSE OF HOPELESSNESS: most youth have no idea of what the future holds for them. They are well educated, with good academic credentials but lack creativity. The fact that jobs are scarce does not give them the license to engage in criminal activities and drug abuse as a means to “survive”. People have varied talents which can, with some creativity, be utilized to earn a living and change the world.
  • IDENTITY CRISIS: Many youth have no idea of who they are and why they exist. Most of them exist just because they are able to breathe. As a result, most youth have no idea of their responsibility in society; So much so that they have nothing to offer to this society.
  • INSECURITY: Insecurity is one of the latent issues increasingly amongst the younger populations in many countries. In most countries, this is a telling statistic mainly because of the records of death, rape, kidnap etc.

  • Internet: Youths this days tend to spend most of their time and life on the net instead of their books these days… Internet (Facebook… What-Sapp.. BBM…Twitter) has become the order of the day. It has even cost them valuable times with loved ones. Took a girl on a date sometime back and she was on her phone throughout. I got pissed and left. It’s crazy. Where are those days of creativity…all gone? We only feed ourselves with feeds from all sort of social networks and hoaxes…it’s really crazy.
  • Sex Life and Relationships: Now that’s the craziest part. Youths these days are obsessed with getting in so called relationships to satisfy their lustful desires which is coated as “love”. Which makes it hard to find true luv these days because the meaning has been compromised. Gone are those days when men were men and women were won by those who deserve them. Gone are those days when men would really strife to get the girl of their dreams. What do we have now, girls going for guys! Men have lost their pride…and women their values. Where are those days when relationships meant getting to know and understand a person… now it’s all about lustful affection? Welcome to the 21st century where sex is of utmost necessity. Sick things are going wrong real fast and the greatest problem is the ignorance that lies within. A wise man once said “ignorance kills faster than the worst epidemic”. And guess what, Ignorance is not an excuse.

Now that we are fully into the new millennium society (21st Century), the society has begun to recognize serious concerns with issues that youths have to deal with today. Some issues have always been there but are now coming to the eyes of the public to find solutions. Other issues are new trends as the society begins to adapt to a faster pace of life. First, you should know that youths today can’t remain youths forever. Secondly, we now have two types of youths:

  • The youth from wealthy homes
  • The youth from poor homes

So, definitely the problems that the rich youths face might defer from those of the poor youths. The poor youth today wants to belong. (Rich youths) for this to be achieved the poor youths feels they require money to get to the position which the rich youths are… So, for that money to be attained the poor youths see making money as their problem and venture into illegal businesses (fraud, yahoo, drugs, etc.) in other to get money and live that lavish life and cater for themselves very well as well as their relatives. That’s my opinion on this issue.
