”Alhaji Samuel Sam Sumana is no longer a member of a political party in Sierra Leone and therefore does not have the continuous requirement to hold office as Vice President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, as provided for in Section 41(b) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No. 6 of 1991, I hereby relieve Alhaji Samuel Sam Sumana of the duties and from the Office of Vice President of Sierra Leone with immediate effect,” a State House statement issued on Tuesday night said.

The President said he is in consultations with the leadership of his party, All People’s Congress (APC), over the appointment of a new Vice President.

”I shall appoint and announce the name of the Vice President of Sierra Leone shortly, pursuant to section 54(5) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No. 6 of 1991,” the President said in the statement, on Wednesday   morning.

Political analysts had said the President lacks the constitutional powers to sack the Vice President without parliaments approval ,but apparently the President felt otherwise.

The ruling partys National Advisory Committee (NAC) had expelled Alhaji Sam-Sumana from the party on the 6th of March over allegations of orchestrating political violence and trying to form a new party in his home district of Kono. He was also accused of falsifying his academic credential, allegations he described as “baseless fabrications and lies”.

The 53-year-old Sam-Sumana had been Vice President since 2007, when he first stood as running mate to President Koroma, who is now serving his second and last term.

On 14 March, the Vice President, sought asylum from the US Embassy in Sierra Leone, a decision which the President said was a demonstrating of ”willingness to abandon his duties and office as Vice President of our beloved Republic”.

Earlier this month, Alhaji Sam-Sumana put himself in voluntary quarantine after one of his security guards died of Ebola.
