LONG ROAD TO SUCCOUR: Devil’s Fingers and Angels’ Wings.

“All these are the beginning of birth pains…,” Matthew 24:8 (NIV).

I do dream sometimes, have had few real convictions and hunches, and I have over the years learned to hold these “serious dreams” with baited breath.

This time, it is a hunch. A hunch about what the schemers from the far east, and their allies discretely bear in their fangs. Demons of war marching and positioning themselves against hapless us while the believers look on blandly, blind to the ominous consequences the massive advancement portends, and seemingly deaf to the noisy sounds of galloping countless vicious beasts of war.

The siege is on…

We must however keep our humanity. The innocent among the fleeing throng must find refuge. They must find milk, warm beds, beautiful story of Christ’s saving grace and love must be shared with them. I reiterate, that among them, in insignificant number, are wolves. Deliberately planted wolves, and they will lie low as long as it takes for them to pounce and make their kills. When the world would least expect.Besieged-al-Yarmouk-camp

The title above is partly inspired by a book I chanced upon about a decade ago, MIRACLE IN MOSTAR, a chilling account of the carnage of man against his fellow man in the old Yugoslavi; killings in the name of religion and sectional interests, documented by the Christian duo of Gerald Kelly and Lowell Sheppard. The horrendous  film, Hotel Rwanda, is another evil of man against man .

Before prefacing their chilling encounters and angelic interventions in the course of putting their lives, incessantly, at risk  ministering to bring amelioration to the suffering people in the civil war ravaged Mostar, Gerald Kelly penned this apt verse in the book, When Winter Comes”

When winter comes, an icy breath

Of death will blow across this sky.

When winter comes, the gripping frost

Of fear will freeze the tears we cry.

When winter comes, the wordless voice

Of children’s eyes will ask us why

                           The people have to die,

                           When winter comes.

When winter comes, the bones of the dead

Will fill this aching city’s streets.

When winter comes, our trembling hands

Will clutch the scraps of food we eat.

         When winter comes, the ‘cleansing’

Of this sorry place will be complete,

                         As hope concedes defeat

                         When winter comes.

When winter comes, the few bags

Of bartered rice will be no more.

When winter comes, we’ll burn our beds

For fuel, and shiver on the floor.

When winter comes, no keys will keep

The wolves of sickness from our door,

We’ll be the wasted lives of war

                     When winter comes.

The world is currently witnessing an unprecedented exodus of millions of people from the east and Syria to safer Europe and America. People hounded by marauding lunatics. Lunatics, who in the name of Islam have continued to massacre and coerce their hapless victims to convert to Islam or be killed. But we know better. It has been more of economical crusades than religious. Bands of plunderers.

My worry is the indifference of the church. Even in Nigeria where the Boko Haram massacred and displaced tens of thousands of people in the North East of Nigeria, bombing churches, slitting throats, and holding children and women as spoils of war.

What role did the Nigerian churches’ coordinating body play to assuaging the anguish and impoverishment of Boko Haram victims? How many sessions and vigils of prayers were held on behalf of the war torn Nigerian North-East states? Were monies and relief items collected on behalf of the victims honestly distributed and handed over? Were efforts made to provide alternative places of worship for their spiritual upkeep? I will not talk about the deluge of allegations of misappropriation until concrete evidence are provided. Besides, that is for their conscience and God to clear.

One fact is glaring however, the Christian Association of Nigerias leadership spent too much time bickering and campaigning for the retention of the ex-president Jonathan than coordinating starling intervention efforts towards ameliorating the lots of Boko Haram victims.

isis-forces-100000-syrian-refugees-to-turkeyWhat role will the church coordinating bodies worldwide play to lessen the anguish of refuges from the Far East and Africa, in terms of coordinated intercession, donation of relief materials, and spread of the gospel? Will Christians and church coordinating groups continue to look on passively?

Shall we wait till the devil’s fingers come upon us or become the needed succor ferried across to these lives on angels’ wings, now?

I hold my peace for now.
