GENESIS 1: 1-3
Jewel is not an open-market commodity. Its beauty lies in its pricelessness so, it’s not cheaply displayed. Those who place value on it finds it. The truth is parallel to mineral resources. They are hid under the ground. It takes extra effort to uncover them. Man must understand that God is not being wicked in keeping these resources from mere surface. He rather intends that His image is industrious and creative like himself. Moreover, He is interested in our effort to discover the provisions He has made available for us in the deep in order to procure maximum satisfaction.
Darkness, the absence of light, or the quality of being dark in colour therefore, is a blanket under which the riches of the deep lie. It doesn’t always depicts evil. As a matter of fact, the perpetrators of evil take advantage of darkness to carry out their mission. The act of God in the creation account will be our focus in this study as we trust the Holy Spirit to reveal God’s mind to us on the subject of darkness upon the deep.
‘When God began creating the heavens and the earth, 2the earth was a shapeless, chaotic mass, with the Spirit of God brooding over the dark vapours.3Then God said, “Let there be light.” And light appeared”. Gen. 1:1-3 (TLB)
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.3Then God said,”Let there be light”; and there was light.
Gen. 1:1-3 ( NKJV)
That God was progressive in his work at creation is unambiguous. The revelation of why He does His works occupies the pages of the Bible. His existence is equally proven by nature. He chose to create the earth within a formless, void and darkened atmosphere out of his decisive nature. He could command the earth into existence but he was shooting at a target. The practicality of the mystery of darkness covering the face of the water is amazing. Human stills and purifies the water in such situation thus, making it useful for domestic purposes. So the phrase: and the darkness was on the face of the deep presupposes God’s intention of filtering and purifying the water for its usability. When man therefore sense darkness upon his deep, it is an indication that filtering and purification is at hand. Often time God takes you through dark moment with intention to explore your potentials so that you could be maximally useful; and that the best in you might come to the limelight. Photo is not made real until it goes through the dark room in the laboratory. Beware, darkness does not necessarily mean evil in God’s plan for his children.
