SAM-SUMANA, SIERRA LEONE’S VICE PRESIDENT FLEES HOME, SEEKS ASYLUM AT THE U.S EMBASSY

Sierra Leone’s Vice-President Alhaji Samuel Sam-Sumana has fled his Hill Station resident saying he is seeking political asylum at the US Embassy. This comes after soldiers surrounded his house and withdrew his security details. His residence is currently heavily guarded .

Vice President Sam-Sumana noted that his life seemed to be threatened after troops had disarmed his bodyguards.

This comes a week after the vice-president’s expulsion from Sierra Leone’s ruling party two weeks ago over allegations of forming a new rival political party, indulging in anti-party activities and presenting a fraudulent Master’s degree prior to the 2007 elections.

Prior to this event Sam-Sumana had put himself in quarantine for 21 days after one of his bodyguards died of Ebola.
