Chukwueze’s Goal Sinks Bayern, Real Frustrate Chelsea’s Great Comeback

Villarreal of Spain knocked Bayern Munich out of the 2022 Champions League Finals on Tuesday, 12th April.

The unlikely hero of the day was Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze who was subbed in on the 84th minutes only to break the Bayerns’ hearts with an 88th-minute strike at the Allianz Arena to give the Spaniards a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their quarter-final tie. They are through  to the semifinal on a 2-1 on aggregate.

The Bayerns’ topmist goal poachee, Robert Lewandowski had put them ahead on the night to level aggregate tie after Villarreal’s 1-0 first-leg win, and with extra time looming, Chukwueze struck the decisive goal which they held on to till the final whistle.

The result means Bayern Munich exit the Champions League in the quarter-finals for the second year running.

Villarreal are into the semi-finals for the first time since 2006 and will play either Liverpool or Benfica in the last four.

The English team are taking a 3-1 lead into Wednesday’s second leg at Anfield.

Karim Benzema’s extra-time winner settled a pulsating Champions League quarter-final tie at the Bernabeu.

Antonio Rudiger then levelled the tie after half-time with a header at the back post, before Timo Werner’s deflected finish stunned the hosts as Chelsea led on aggregate.

But substitute Rodrygo responded to pull Real Madrid level five minutes later and force extra time, where Karim Benzema put his side ahead with another headed goal in the tie. It means Real Madrid will advance to the semi-finals, where they will face either Manchester City or rivals Atletico.
