Helping Believers Discern the Truth from Shouting Headlines- Riley

Much of what we see in today’s headlines is rooted in a world view that is not biblical. Colossians 2:1-10 warns us against being cheated “through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8). Many Christians today have assigned authority to philosophies and empty deceits, thus allowing the shifting opinions and changing knowledge of this world to take precedence over God’s Word.

Isaiah 55:6-11 reminds us that God’s Word is eternal, eternally true, and eternally productive. In light of God’s declaration concerning His Word, Christian leaders should be training believers to use the right “road map” concerning the path they take. Media sources that are rooted in a secular worldview will chart a path that leads to fear, insecurity, and self-centeredness. God’s Word charts a path that leads to faith, security, and love for others.

Philippians 4:8-9 show us the way to lead others to proper discernment amid such shouting headlines as we see today. Our meditation should be on the things of God, noble, just, pure, lovely things: things that are true. Our goal should be training those who follow Christ to meditate – to deliberate, evaluate, or continually reason and occupy their minds with the things of Christ. The key to doing this is found in Romans 12:1-2. We must train believers how to present themselves a living sacrifice to God, allowing Him to transform them through the renewing of their minds. If we want to help believers discern the truth from shouting headlines, we must first train believers to yield to Christ, to be transformed by Christ, and to renew their thinking by Christ.
