… and darkness was on the face of the deep…2c.

It is important to note once more that the darkness did not cover just any form of water but the deep! Deep is not a mere water. It’s a large volume of water both in length, width and height. By nature the deep accommodates all forms of aquatic beings, meant to enrich man. Besides, they do not live in the surface water otherwise, they become prey to man. It takes an industrious, competent and willing person to farm and make profit in the deep. It is a tasking terrine to do business. Why? Because the depth of the deep is always longer than the height of the net. The irony of it is that man cannot ordinarily jump into it for fishing without being consumed by wild aquatic animals or drown. Our understanding of the deep will greatly increase as we consider Apostle Peter’s, experience with Jesus at the Sea of Galilee.

1One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God, 2he saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”5Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”6When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.

Lk. 5:1-6 (NIV)

*Jesus’ discovery of the boat at the edge of the water connotes that the boat is not the main equipment for fishing. It is the platform upon which man stands in letting down of the nets for a catch. It is even clearly stated that the boats owners were washing their nets (the main equipment) at the seashore. This implies that the net goes to the deep not the man! Moreover, Jesus’ getting into the boat though God, stresses that man drowns when he jumps into the deep. When his preaching was over, Jesus said, put out into the deep water and let down the nets for a catch. It is necessary to note what Jesus did not say. He did not say let down the net but the nets. By implication it means a net cannot reach the depth of the deep but nets. I presume that ten nets or more were joined together so as to reach the depth for a catch. What a discovery!

Peter’s response through the help of the Holy Spirit in verse 5 reveals to us how tasking and time-consuming fishing at the deep could be. … “We’ve worked hard all night…” Here is a full grown man, a fisher per excellence. A professional if I may say. He acknowledged the tasking nature of fishing in the deep. He was truthful in letting the master know that he wasn’t a lazy man. He was real and factual. From his answer one could figure that the deep is an intense zone. Naturally fishes swim and feed at nigh. Peter and his colleagues had no cause to be fruitless in their labour that night. But regardless of necessary factors considered, their efforts yielded no fruit because they were practicing at the deep. There, fish has security assurance; an abode in the depth of the deep, difficult for man to encroach. But at the word of Jesus, the one through whom all things were made and sustained, Peter let down beyond the darkened surface of the deep and there was a catch!

Our heart of understanding is enlightened now beyond reasonable doubt what was in God’s mind at creation which the Bible captions as …and darkness was on the face of the deep. Again his intention of creating the earth out of chaotic mass or nothingness has been revealed. He meant no evil. He simply intended that man will uncover the darkness, get to the deep and discover the treasures.

*Let us at this juncture gain insight into what is in the dark-covered deep with a view to launch into God’s goodness meant for us.

“…and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters’.” 2b (NKJV)

“…. the spirit of God brooding over the dark vapoursv.2b (TLB).

It’s an undeniable fact that all professions gain their relevance from the Bible. It doesn’t matter whether the Lordship of Jesus Christ is accepted by them or not! Agriculturists believe by instinct that when a hen broods on her eggs, she intends to hatch chickens. By implication it means that an egg that is not brooded upon can’t produce life. It becomes a pollutant. So, as the spirit of God broods or hovers over the deep, treasures are being hatched. Many Christians out of impatience discard the brooding. The accidental breaking following their exit from the darkroom breeds pollution just like an egg whose brooding process is incomplete. God through His spirit, as he broods upon the deep fashions out the riches of the ocean. Interestingly still, a hen does not expose her chicks to light immediately the hatching is done. They are kept in the dark for the owner to discover. In the same way we are to discover what God has made available for us by a way of searching. Have you ever wondered why the darkness on your deep? Do you even consider yourself a deep? Is the patience required to perfect your brooding process there? God sometimes envelopes opportunity in mud. He expects us to be concerned with what is inside not what is outside.

*The advent of light following the brooding on the deep reveals God’s majesty in creation. The world that was created out of chaos wouldn’t have witness light except for a purpose.

“….and God said let there be light…”

God’s goodness is brought to light through the beauty of grammar as verses two and three of our text link. In verse two we affirm that God’s Spirit brooded upon the deep so as to create treasures for man’s sake. However, verse 3 reads. “And God said…”And, grammatically functions as correlative conjunction joining together two positive words of equal sizes. By indication this implies that what God did in verse 2 agrees with what He does in verse 3. To a sensual mind, the word hovering would suggest a state of wondering, confusion and aimlessness. But on the contrary, there was a deliberateness in the hovering of the spirit to achieve a purpose on the deep. The word comes in between v2&3 to foster agreement in the act of God. Literally light pierces through the darkness for the purpose of discovering what is hidden. The beauty of what darkness covers also radiates as light shines. I need to let you know under God that light helps in letting you pierce through the darkness to see what is at the depth of your deep. Usually darkness covers only the surface of the deep, not the deep. You must therefore not be deceived by what appears on the surface at the expense of what is in the deep. Also light helps in making you to work within the span of your days. God did an awesome work in calling for the light after the brooding. A life that has been brooded upon but fail to discover the imperativeness of the light of his day may not maximise the jewels in his deep. Jacob illustrates this in a better way. He acquired wealth while staying with Laban but he wasn’t comfortable until the light of his day came.

24So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

27The man asked him, “What is your name?””Jacob,” he answered. 28Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.” 29Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”

But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.

30So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.” 31The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip. Gen. 32:24-31 (NIV)

24But during the night he got up and wakened his two wives and his two concubines and eleven sons, and sent them across the Jordan River at the Jabbok ford with all his possessions, then returned again to the camp and was there alone; and a Man wrestled with him until dawn. 25 And when the Man saw that he couldn’t win the match, he struck Jacob’s hip and knocked it out of joint at the socket.26 Then the Man said, “Let me go, for it is dawn.”But Jacob panted, “I will not let you go until you bless me.”27″What is your name?” the Man asked. “Jacob,” was the reply.28″It isn’t anymore!” the Man told him. “It is Israel-one who has power with God. Because you have been strong with God, you shall prevail with men.”29″What is your name?” Jacob asked him. “No, you mustn’t ask,” the Man told him. And he blessed him there.30Jacob named the place “Peniel” (“The Face of God”), for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is spared.”

3The sun rose as he started on, and he was limping because of his hip

GEN. 32:24-31 (TLB).

His situation in the 24th verse of the above passage of the scriptures shows that he was a wrestler. He had wrestled in the arm of flesh all the days of his life despite the brooding upon his deep. A curse known with strugglers is that they don’t admit defeat even when it is obvious that they are not making any good success. Brooding without light beclouds one’s sight. Man objects the move of God for his breakthrough in the absence of light. Boxing was Jacob’s response when the light of his day appeared. For how long beloved will you wrestle with God? You should have launched into your deep by now except for your wrestling habit. God keeps beaming the light but He is being put off by your character. Except for his mercy, Jacob would’ve missed his light completely. When his struggling nature was fully known to God, he touched the socket of his hip. What does this mean? It means God broke his wandering leg. The medium through which he wrestles and struggles ceased. Jacob, the name he bore before the divine visitation correlates with his life and experience. It depicts struggling and dribbling but when God descended on him as his spirit did on the deep, his name changed. He was no longer Jacob but Israel. Overcomer with God and men. He secured the light of his day as he left Penuel that is, the presence of God.

*The necessity of light (sun) upon individual for the maximization of his potentials cannot be overemphasized. Jacob stopped struggling for riches the day the sun rose on him. He stopped chasing blessings as he works. Christ is the light. Piercing through the dark world is achievable only through him. Man’s effort to attain success counts as He appends his signature. The source from which man was made is earthly, God in the power of the Holy Spirit is the only source capable of piercing through the clay in order to fashion out vessels first, for his glory and for our use.
